SPARC servers come preconfigured to allow input and output only by means of the ALOM system controller. The system controller’s circuitry runs independently of the server, using the server’s standby power.

Therefore, ALOM firmware and software continue to function when the server OS goes offline or when the server is powered off. The ALOM system controller is accessed through either the SER MGT port or the NET MGT port.
